Favourite Home Decor Accessories

June 29, 2020

Favourite Home Decor Accessories

Small home accessories are some of my favourite items to shop for and purchase. They’re great because they are small but often have big impact. They can easily be moved around your house and quickly transform areas and spaces. So today I’m sharing some of my favourite small decor accessories for the home.

Coffee table books. Collecting coffee table books is one of my favourite hobbies haha and I probably have a stack of them on every surface of my home (coffee table, console, nightstand, serving carts, kitchen…) They’re great for adding some height variation to surfaces and you can easily layer other accessories on top… like vases, candles or decorative objects like the wishbone shown above.

Vases. I love having flowers around my home (both real and faux) and so having vases is necessary and there are so many beautiful ones available right now. I love the blue and white floral one above – it’s beautiful with or without florals inside and the cane one adds some nice texture to a space.

Wreathes. I own a few styles of wreaths, both ones for wall hanging and decorative ones on stands. I think they’re beautiful and because they are a taller accessory they can be used to add some height to your spaces and shelves. The new white wreath shown above is so pretty and a good contrast to the gold ones that are so popular.

Small Wall Decor. I have had my eye on the dinner bell above for quite a while. It’s so sweet looking and perfect for ringing to call all your babes to dinner or to come inside after hours of play outdoors. I also just recently added the ‘this is our happy place’ sign to my home as well. I smile every time I walk by it. I’m often a big proponent of large scale items on a wall but these little touches have a place too.

Boxes and Bowls. Boxes and larger bowls are great for placing on shelves or consoles. Not only are they great at filling in larger spaces, they are useful too for storage (who doesn’t need more storage).

Layering Pieces. I love using smaller decorative objects like the wishbone above, candles or small planters by placing them on stacks of coffee table books. Objects like wood prayer beads or the popular chain links are perfect for draping over large surfaces or again stacks of books.

I hope you love my selection of favourite accessories. I’ve linked them all below for you. Now I’m off to finally order that adorable dinner bell!

xo,

Rachel

My picks from the Studio Mcgee x Target Threshold Collection

My picks from the Studio Mcgee x Target Threshold Collection

I know it’s hard to be excited about things like shopping and a lot of us are not even thinking about home decor right now with everything that is going on in the world currently but after 2 weeks of staying safe at home (for which I am incredibly grateful to be – safe at home), I honestly needed a little distraction and fun from the news. When I woke up a few days ago to see that one of my favourite designers had a new collection with Target it was the perfect bit of distraction I needed. I love everything in this collection that officially releases today. From textiles like rugs and pillows to decor pieces like vases and faux trees and even large furniture like chairs and 3 gorgeous consoles (good luck choosing between them!)… this collection is beautiful. I’ve narrowed down my top picks below.

I hope you are all well and keeping safe at home.

Currently Coveting – My Home Decor Wishlist

    August 28, 2018

Currently Coveting – My Home Decor Wishlist

I like to keep a little list on my phone.  It’s filled with all the items I’m currently wishing for and their price tags. It usually only includes the more higher end or larger pieces I’m coveting and I find that keeping this list helps me focus on my bigger home decor goals. By having a list I can continuously see and focus on, I am able to better save up for them by minimizing my spending on smaller, impulse items I may be tempted to buy.  I thought it would be fun to share what’s currently on that little list on my phone right now so here it is:wants

    1.  This gorgeous wreath is from The Cross Design.  It has been on my wish list for over a year but its a pricey piece at almost $300 so I am eagerly awaiting their annual sale at the end of the year.  My friend has it in her home (she splurged last year!) and I just go all heart eyes every time I see it – that’s when you know its true love ha
    2. I know this isn’t the most exciting thing on my list but we could really use some new towels.  I love the feel of fresh, fluffy towels and ours are well.. well loved to say the least.
    3. We’ve upgraded almost all the light fixtures in our home but a few of the builder grade lights remain in our home – one being in our living room.  So I’ve been on the hunt for a new fixture for there for awhile.  I’m loving the shape of this one, a simple drum shade but with a scallop edge to add a nice detail – this one is super pricey so I’m hoping to find a similar one for a better price 😉
    4. We have lived in our current house (we bought new build) for 3.5 years now and we are just getting a fence installed in the next few weeks.   It has been a long, long, long wait and I am so excited to finally be able to use our yard properly.   I think this garden sign will add just the cutest touch to our new backyard gate door.
    5. Gold cutlery – I don’t own any!  I have had my eye on the Ikea set for awhile but it is never instock at my current store.  Im hoping to find some before Thanksgiving though (we’re hosting!)
    6. Another item that is always out of stock (for good reason – just look at this beauty!) is this olive branch from Mcgee & Co.  I literally got an email last week that it restocked and by the time I went to buy – it was gone again!  I need to have faster fingers next time!
    7. I never really did a nursery for Owen (3rd kid problems?!) so we’re jumping right into designing his big boy room (I already have his full size bed haha).  This is the nightstand I’m currently coveting for his room.  Loving the natural wood tone of it – of course!
    8. I may have a slight addiction to home decor coffee table books.  I’ve had my eye on this one lately as I’m really feeling the coastal vibe in home decor lately.
    9. Lastly, another coffee table book I’m coveting is this one. If the house on the cover is any indication – I’m going to love this book!

Do you keep a wishlist?  If so, what’s on yours?

    Five Favourites for your Friday

    Five Favourites for your Friday

It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of Instagram and Pinterest (you can follow me here!). I am constantly saving photos from both platforms that I find inspiring.  So I thought I’d start a new feature here on the blog where I share five of my favourites that are inspiring me each week.   Here are this weeks five favourites:

    1. The exterior of this house by Kimmel Studio is so dreamy.  The shingles, the white trim, those steps leading up to the front door, and those two round windows.  I’ll take the ocean front view too!

    2.  This formal living room of Ali Fedotowsky-Manno is a neutral lovers dream!  Im particularly loving the window shades, the gold accents and the arm chairs especially combined with the shiplap.

    3.  This kitchen by Life on Virginia Street has been all over the internet recently and for good reason!  It’s just that good!  I’m feeling so inspired by that blue island and those Serena & Lily pendants!  Those chairs are pretty nice too and the styling is perfection.

    4.  This bathroom by Christine at @mrsandrusiak is all sorts of gorgeous!  The dark vanity with those bold and stunning knobs is just so so pretty.  Also loving that marble tiled floor and the shape of the toilet (who knew a toilet could be inspiring?!)

    5.  This weeks last photo is this photo from a Style at Home spread of Jillian Harris’ bathroom storage cabinet.  Particularly loving the storage of the sponges and hair scrunchies. Scrunchies as decor… I love it.

Why I “adore” my new adorne light switches and outlets

    July 26, 2018

Why I “adore” my new adorne light switches and outlets

I’ll be honest, light switches and electrical outlets are not something I’ve ever thought much about.  So when I heard about Legrand and their new take on switches and outlets, I was definitely intrigued.  My husband (a frequent hardware store customer) of course had seen and heard of them and was very interested in using them in our home.  We recently installed quite a few Legrand products from their adorne collection in our home… and wow I never thought a light switch or an outlet could make such an impact!

The first room we upgraded was our main floor powder room.  We (aka my handy hubby) installed their 1 gang gfci option outlet (since its next to the sink) with their powder white wall plate from their adorne collection. It was super easy to install and I just love how sleek it looks and that there are no screws visible at all.

37686303_10160563265605468_2862218999792402432_noutlet.jpgFor the switches, we installed a new soft tap switch for our fan and the best thing ever – a motion activated switch for the light!  My kids will no longer run into the washroom and yell “Mom the light!, I need the light on!”.  The light will turn on every time they run in – its the ultimate mom hack!   Thanks Legrand for that one!

37698867_10160572305590468_4959415929445285888_n.jpgWe also installed a few switches and outlets in our master bedroom – some with brushed brass/gold wall plates! Did you even know such gorgeous plates existed?!  I’m loving how stylish and gorgeous the brushed brass covers are looking with the rest of my decor.

37831489_10160571252225468_3541232490108682240_n.jpg37733909_10160563265720468_6962330879477678080_nWe chose more of the soft tap switches in here as well and another feature I love about them is that they have a tiny light in the middle.  Its not super bright and it is so helpful when you’re getting up in the middle of the night and need to turn the light on, as there is no more fumbling around the wall looking for the switch.

37760504_10160571252345468_8883074270389862400_n.jpgThe best thing about the adorne collection is that it is totally customizable – they have outlets that pop out and that have USB ports (we chose both of these options – see below), wifi ready outlets and dimmers, soft tap and wave activated switches.  They also have over 35 different wall plates too: matte white, gloss white, gold, black… even leather, metal and wood!

37377534_10160543654985468_6568942575590309888_n37304221_10160543654960468_4479412720906534912_nThe USB outlets have also completely enhanced the functionality of our spaces.  My husband used to have a power cord under his nightstand to accommodate all the things he needed to plug in (a lamp, a phone charger, a laptop charger etc. ). But with these new Legrand outlets with built in USB ports he was able to toss that power cord for good!

I love how the covers are so clean looking and modern. These outlets and switches have not only added some style to our kitchen and home but they have definitely added some value to our home as well!

    First Favourites of 2018

    First Favourites of 2018

There are always so many good deals around the end of the year and so many new products being released for spring in the early new year that I thought it would be fun to post some of my favourite new items I’ve picked up lately.    It’s kind of a mix of all sorts of things clearly – some winter items and some spring too which is kind of a reflection of my life right now – stuck in the middle of winter (hello Sorel boots!) but dreaming of spring (hey gorgeous new straw bag!).
