Owen’s 2nd Birthday – A Puppy Party!

November 19, 2019

Owen’s 2nd Birthday – A Puppy Party!

It’s taken me over a month to get this post up!  Life with kids is just so busy isn’t it?!  In early October my littlest man turned 2!  Everyone always says it but thats because its true – the time just passes so quickly.  I keep thinking about how I’ve only got him home with me for another 2 years and then all my babes will be in school. Wow, okay can’t think about that anymore! Back to the party!

Our little man is obsessed with puppies right now.  Everywhere we go, he points them out and screams ‘a puppy’.  He only lets us watch paw patrol on the tv haha and he has to carry at least 3 puppy stuffies everywhere he goes.  So naturally his party theme this year just had to be puppies!

I started with these meri meri puppy plates, cups and napkins (meri meri is one of my favourite brands for party supplies) and the party planning took off from there. I found the paw print scrapbook paper at Michaels and thought it would make a cute placemat.   I had the bone shaped place cards made for a cute personalized touch for the guests and then I scattered some cute paw prints around the table.

20191004144916_IMG_8183-01I took the mint and white colours from the puppy cups for the balloon colours and purchased some paw print balloons on etsy for a balloon garland (I just love a balloon garland).

20191004144940_IMG_8187-01.jpegWe ordered the puppy cake to match the plates and it turned out so well!  A friend of mine made the cookies to match the theme as well.

20191006102107_IMG_8202-01.jpegThe finishing touch was the adorable puppy shaped balloons I found on amazon.  They have little legs and can be pulled around like you’re walking them.  They were so fun for the kids.  The party turned out so well and most importantly – our little guy had a blast!

How the kids feel about the move and 5 things we’re doing to help with the transition.

August 11, 2019

How the kids feel about the move and 5 things we’re doing to help with the transition.

Moving can be hard on kids, especially when they also have to move schools which is the case for mine.  Though we’re not moving far at all, its still a big change for all of us.  Although the kids are very excited to move, they did have a lot of questions at the beginning and there have been moments of sadness (as can be expected).  So I thought it might be helpful to share what we’ve been doing to help ease the transition for them.

1. Talking to them about the move

This is such a simple and obvious tip but talking to our kids and including them in the process has really helped. We took our kids with us house hunting so they knew we were looking into moving.  I will admit it did confuse them a bit at first.  They thought every house we saw was going to be our new one.  In hindsight I’d probably not take my kids with me to view homes until we found one we really liked… but that’s not always possible.  I’d also definitely have talked to them a bit more about the idea of moving before we started looking at homes.

Once we started having conversations about it, it really helped them understand what moving means.   They had a lot of questions like: could they bring their stuff with them? – we told them of course everything would come with us.  They asked if their walls could come (so adorable!).  We told them the walls and paint had to stay but that we could do their new rooms in the same way again or a fun new way!   That got them excited!  We talked about what happens when you move and why we are moving.  We continue to talk about their new school (and we are going on a tour of it soon).  We also drive by the new house occasionally and the new school and talk about how exciting it will all be.

2. Involving the kids in the packing

I have involved the kids in the packing process and they have loved helping us pack.   I also think it comforts them to help and to see that their clothes and toys are coming with us (they don’t just come home and wonder where all their stuff is!).  I often give them a box and they fill it.  They feel proud to help and to write their name on the boxes.  I sometimes have to repack the boxes but that’s ok 😉

3. A countdown

I downloaded a simple free app onto my phone and we’ve been counting down the days until our move together.  This has gotten them really excited and they ask daily to check how many days are left!

4. Bringing them to the new home after they’re rooms are somewhat set up.

Moving day can be chaotic to say the least!  We plan to have family watch the kids for most of the day while we move items to the new place.  We are not moving far so this should work out well.  I am hoping to get their beds and toys set up in their new rooms before they come over so when they walk in, it will already feel a bit like their own rooms.  Their rooms will also be some of the first rooms I work on in the new home – painting, adding trim work etc.

5.  A welcome gift from the new house

I plan to create a little welcome gift for the kids from the house.  It won’t be anything too big, I’m thinking a pool floot and a new towel for each of them since our new place has a pool and I know they’re excited about it.   Other ideas I thought about were a new backpack and lunchbox for their new school or a new decor piece or toy for their rooms. There are also some really cute childrens books about moving that would be cute to read that first night before bed.

These tips have helped us a lot and have really gotten the kids excited about the whole process.  Hopefully they can help anyone else who’s moving soon too!

xo

Ainsleys Pink Pink Unicorn 4th Birthday

August 30, 2018

Ainsleys Pink Pink Unicorn 4th Birthday

I can not believe my baby girl is 4!  We all say it, but time really does go by so fast!

Putting this party together was so much fun.  All she really wanted was that it be pink, pink (emphasis on the pink!) and unicorn themed.   I think we pulled it off!  I found the sweetest plates and napkins at Homesense and they kind of set the tone for the rest of the party.  We took the various shades of pink from the plates and tried to incorporate them throughout the rest of the party.   I found these starburst shaped balloons at the balloon store and loved them for their uniqueness and also how they sort of mimicked unicorn horns as well.   I ordered the cake from a local bakery in shades of what else – pink!  Another local shop made the unicorn topper for us.   For the favours, I ordered everyone their own unicorn wands from this shop.  They were a big hit!   I also used a few of her unicorn stuffies on the drink cart for a cute little touch.

ains3ains5ains6ains10.jpgains9ains4ains11.jpgI have found that investing in cute party decor staples really helps me a ton with party planning.  I found the milk bottles at Michaels and they’re glass so I can reuse them for many more parties.  The drink stand and cake stand I also reuse for a ton of parties.  The drink cart makes for the perfect little drink and snack stand too – again that I can reuse and restyle again and again.

I know she had such a fun day and an actual unicorn may have even showed up at the end for some magical rides :).

Thanks to all our friends and family who made it out to celebrate with us, you made her day so special!

A Sunflower Field & A White Dress

August 12, 2018

A Sunflower Field & A White Dress

A few weeks ago I headed to a sunflower field I had heard about.  It was supposed to be the largest sunflower field around, with over 1.5 million sunflowers.  To say I was excited is an understatement!  This farm is only open every 4 years and only for about 2 weeks.  We headed over the first Tuesday morning it was open.

Sunflowers02Sunflowers06Sunflowers07This farm was pure magic.  As soon as I drove up and caught my first glimpse of the fields I was awestruck. Walking around it was even more magical.   We made sure to show as much respect for the farm and the plants as possible and no sunflowers were harmed in the taking of these photos.  It was not busy when we were there and we got to really take in the farm for all its beauty.

Sunflowers11Sunflowers12Sunflowers15Fast forward to the next weekend; news of this farm had travelled and suddenly I was reading reports of 7000 cars showing up in one day.  Police had to be called, people were parking illegally and crossing dangerous roads of traffic on foot with strollers, they were avoiding paying the entrance fees and were wandering into the fields from the roads and trampling over the plants.  Sadly this lovely farm had to close for the season (possibly never to reopen again).  I am so disappointed this happened and my heart hurts for this farm and these flowers. I feel so lucky that these farmers opened up their magical sunflower farm to us and that I got to experience it (and to do so with my kids).  I hope that they do reopen one day and that I can go back again as it was truly such a beautiful place. Sunflowers24Sunflowers27Sunflowers28Sunflowers29Sunflowers34Sunflowers43Sunflowers49

A Lavender Field & My Littlest Babe

July 18, 2018

A Lavender Field & My Littlest Babe

A few weekends ago we drove out to a lavender field with my littlest babe.  It was meant to be a style inspired shoot with just me… but he of course stole the show and ended up being featured in almost all the photos haha.  But that’s mom life right… things always change according to what the babes want.   It actually ended up being magical with him there though;  I held him, I let him explore the flowers and I nursed him right there in the field.  I’m so glad he changed my plans around :).  Here are some photos from our time at the field.

Easy Strawberry Shortcake Cheat

June 18, 2018

Easy Strawberry Shortcake Cheat

Don’t get me wrong, I love to bake.  But sometimes I just don’t have the time or sometimes I just want a really quick dessert for my kids with little prep and clean up.  So for those nights in the summer I whip up these super easy strawberry shortcakes… no baking required ;).

Grab a fresh container of strawberries, a package of premade spongecakes and some whipped cream (or whipping cream if you want to do a tad bit more work) and voila – easy and delicious strawberry shortcake cheat.  With the right plating, your guests and kids won’t even know its not made from scratch ;).
