Favourite Home Decor Accessories

June 29, 2020

Favourite Home Decor Accessories

Small home accessories are some of my favourite items to shop for and purchase. They’re great because they are small but often have big impact. They can easily be moved around your house and quickly transform areas and spaces. So today I’m sharing some of my favourite small decor accessories for the home.

Coffee table books. Collecting coffee table books is one of my favourite hobbies haha and I probably have a stack of them on every surface of my home (coffee table, console, nightstand, serving carts, kitchen…) They’re great for adding some height variation to surfaces and you can easily layer other accessories on top… like vases, candles or decorative objects like the wishbone shown above.

Vases. I love having flowers around my home (both real and faux) and so having vases is necessary and there are so many beautiful ones available right now. I love the blue and white floral one above – it’s beautiful with or without florals inside and the cane one adds some nice texture to a space.

Wreathes. I own a few styles of wreaths, both ones for wall hanging and decorative ones on stands. I think they’re beautiful and because they are a taller accessory they can be used to add some height to your spaces and shelves. The new white wreath shown above is so pretty and a good contrast to the gold ones that are so popular.

Small Wall Decor. I have had my eye on the dinner bell above for quite a while. It’s so sweet looking and perfect for ringing to call all your babes to dinner or to come inside after hours of play outdoors. I also just recently added the ‘this is our happy place’ sign to my home as well. I smile every time I walk by it. I’m often a big proponent of large scale items on a wall but these little touches have a place too.

Boxes and Bowls. Boxes and larger bowls are great for placing on shelves or consoles. Not only are they great at filling in larger spaces, they are useful too for storage (who doesn’t need more storage).

Layering Pieces. I love using smaller decorative objects like the wishbone above, candles or small planters by placing them on stacks of coffee table books. Objects like wood prayer beads or the popular chain links are perfect for draping over large surfaces or again stacks of books.

I hope you love my selection of favourite accessories. I’ve linked them all below for you. Now I’m off to finally order that adorable dinner bell!

Rachel

Linen Closet Reveal

Linen Closet Reveal

I’m so excited to share our newly updated linen closet with you! I wanted a project that would be quick and fun while we are staying at home and this was the perfect one. I absolutely love how it turned out.

The closet is actually a really good size but I don’t think it’s been touched probably since this house was built (18 years ago!). So I started by giving the entire room a fresh coat of white paint. I wanted a bright white since this room has no natural light so I chose Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore. This instantly made a huge difference as it covered up any old marks and scuffs the walls had and really brightened it up.

Next I added these fun polka dots! They were super easy to install as they are just like stickers (and they are removable so if I ever want to change this room up, I easily can).

Next I added some new storage baskets. I wanted to add some warmth and texture to the very black and white space so I chose these perfect water hyacinth baskets (I have the medium size).

Now I invite you to see the finished space!

I store extra pillows, sheets and blankets on the upper shelf and the baskets are great for storing extra throw cushion covers and toiletries as well as diapers and wipes. I even have some tissue boxes in them too! I also love these bottled detergents, I’ll admit I bought them mostly for styling because the bottles are just so pretty but they do work great as well!

The medicine box I bought with a red plus on it which didn’t work with the room. I had a black plus decal made and put it right over the red one… a little tip if you can’t find exactly what you need. Finally we changed out the light. It was literally just a light bulb before and I’m so happy with this simple yet stylish light. Take a look at this before and after.

I’m just loving how fun, playful and organized this space is now.

Front Porch Essentials and My Plans for our Own Front Porch.

May 22, 2020

Front Porch Essentials and My Plans for our Own Front Porch.

We moved into our new home a few weeks before fall started last year and with the unpacking and winter, I really haven’t touched our porch much at all. Now that the warmer weather is here I’m dreaming of a pretty and welcoming (when we can have guests again!) front porch. Below I’m sharing my plans for the space (including what I think are essentials for any porch) and what items I’m planning to grab!

Items I’ve Already Added

Large rug for layering – I recently purchased the black and white striped rug below and I love how I can layer a doormat on top. It creates a cozy feeling for the porch. It’s an indoor/outdoor rug and so far its held up well against the rain and dirt and its machine washable too!

Cute doormat (an essential) – I’ve had this “please hide packages from husband” doormat for awhile now and everyone who comes to our house always comments on it and laughs. It’s definitely a fun one… and sometimes the delivery person actually hides packages under it LOL. I think every porch needs a doormat, whether it has a funny saying or simply the word welcome written on it, it instantly creates a welcoming invitation to your home.

A cute sign – This happy place sign is my newest purchase and I plan to hang it on the brick outside the door. I also love the ‘welcome’ and ‘home sweet home’ versions as well!

Items On My Wishlist

New lighting – I would love to swap out our current light as the style that is there doesn’t match my own. I’d love to add this light as I love the lantern style and the larger scale of it. Lighting is always so powerful and instantly changes a space.

A wreath (an essential) – A gorgeous wreath is always an essential for me and if you know me, you know I love lemons so this wreath is perfect. I also love this wreath, this wreath and this one too!

Planters (an essential) – A few cute planters are also a must have for any porch. I’m loving the fluted style right now (as shown on the black one) so much and I’d add some hydrangeas or a large fern for a super lush look. A smaller planter in front of a larger adds a nice layered look as well.

Small accessories – I want to add a few lanterns to the opposite side of the door and the planters. I’m loving these gold toned ones and how they play off the shade of the doormat and new address numbers.

Address numbers – Finally I’d like to add some beautiful address numbers to our space as well. I love these unlacquered brass ones so much and they’ll patina so nicely.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on my front porch plans! Leave me a comment below!

xo,

Rach

Favourite Pool Floats of 2020

May 18, 2020

Favourite Pool Floats of 2020

This is our first full summer with a pool. I have always dreamed of owning a pool and it was a must have when we were house hunting last year. As you can imagine, I have spent an exorbitant amount of time looking at pool floats since… well… basically the day our offer was accepted on this new house haha!

So I’ve taken all my pool float googling results and rounded up my favourite pool floats of 2020 in this post to share with all of you.

I’ll highlight a few of my very favourites from above.

1. The strawberry ring near the top is just so sweet. I love the quality of this brand too and they always knock it out the park with their designs.

2. The flower ring is the one my daughter said is her very favourite. I mean its pink, its filled with glitter and its in the shape of a flower. What else does a little girl need?!

3. The sloth float makes me laugh every time I look at him. Isn’t that what a pool float is all about… lounging around just like a sloth haha

4. The mermaid tail is sure to be a hit with any little girl and it comes in blue too!

5. The xoxo game, though technically not a pool float, looks like so much fun! It floats in the water and you can play tic tac toe !

6. And finally the bottle of rose…because its been a rough spring and summer am I right?!

Lastly, don’t forget a pump so you can blow these up really quick and deflate them too for easy storage!

xo,

Rachel

Let’s Talk Organizing!

April 30, 2020

Let’s Talk Organizing!

I have always loved organization and my husband will attest to me loving things always being in their proper places (as much as it annoys him haha). But since we’ve been home so much lately (aka all the time) during this pandemic I’ve really taken the organization thing up a notch. We have more food in our home right now than we usually do (since we’re only grocery shopping every 2 or 3 weeks now instead of weekly) and with everyone home all the time I needed a better system. After scouring Pinterest for organized pantries, today I’m sharing some images that are inspiring me and which items I’ve picked up that are helping me achieve my goal of a more functional and beautiful pantry and home.

Rachel Parcell’s pantry below is a dream!

Small spaces can be organized and functional too – a snack drawer for the kids. Image via Rach Parcell

A gorgeous space via Cambridge Home Company.

This pantry via The Home Edit is so organized and colourful.

Below are all the items you need to have an organized space too. I find the OXO pop containers to be very useful. The larger sizes are great for flour, pasta, sugar – all the staples. The smaller ones are great for everything from baking soda to goldfish crackers. I’m especially loving their cereal containers as they make pouring cereal so much easier for my kids. The candy style ones are just so cute for snacks too!

Baskets are great for organizing things like chip bags and any refills for your containers and they hide the things that aren’t always the prettiest to look at.

Bins are perfect for smaller items – like in the photo above of the kids snacks or organizing similar things like sauces and condiments. Turntables are also excellent for sauces or spices and keep things accessible.

Labels are super useful for easily identifying the contents of the containers (since we recycled all the boxes ha). Etsy has tons of cute labels for all the jars and containers!

Lastly I highly recommend The Home Edit book (and their Instagram) for great tips and tricks and inspiration!

So tell me… have you been organizing a lot lately too?

Rachel
