A few of my favourite houseplants and 10 beautiful must have planters

October 29, 2020

A few of my favourite houseplants and 10 beautiful must have planters

I have recently become a plant lady. There I said it haha. I may or may not have bought 5 new plants this week! It all started back in February when we went to our local farmers market and they were giving away a free Pilea plant to every customer. I didn’t think I was very good at keeping plants alive so I never really tried but once I realized I could keep my pilea alive I got another plant and another…. and well its become quite a fun hobby.

I am nowhere near a professional at this but I wanted to share some of my favourite house plants with you and hopefully convince one or two of you to give your green thumb a try and believe in yourself!

Pilea – The one that started it all

If you are new to plants, I think this is the perfect beginner plant. It is so easy to care for. It likes a lot of light so I keep mine near the windowsill in my kitchen and water it every time it looks dry (every few days?). It will also start to look droopy if it is too dry too so thats a telltale sign it needs water asap. New growth happens in the middle as a new leaf forms and emerges to grow a stem outwards. You can see the process close up below.

I also love this plant because it grows little baby plants around it which you can cut and grow into new plants (see the little one growing in the photo below?!). That’s why the pilea is often called the friendship plant – because you can cut the baby pups and share them with your friends.

Pilea Depressa aka Baby Tears

This is another type of Pilea that I am loving. Although the name is slightly depressing… literally its called depressa, it really is such a sweet plant. It has much smaller petals than the Pilea above and grows these long stems that drape so elegantly. It gets quite dense as well and is a great plant for a hanging planter. It grows quite quickly and prefers indirect partial sun. They love water so don’t let them dry out. They will wilt if they dry out.

Crispy Wave Fern

It’s technical name is Japanese Asplenium Nidus. I love the look of this plant because it has nice bright green leaves that have a slight wrinkle to them. It’s also a great air purifier. Its leaves are thicker than most other ferns making it better at producing oxygen. It also can grow really big if given a larger container. I usually water it when I water my pilea, so a few times a week. It likes to be consistently moist, not too wet and not dry. It also likes low light, no direct sun.

Peperomia Hope

This is one of my recent purchases. It’s actually a succulent but unlike most succulents this one likes more water and a higher humidity. I love the look and feel of its round disc like petals. Mine is still very young but as it grows it creates long vines that will drape over the pots edges. It’s a good beginner plant as well because it can handle some neglect haha and you only need to water it about once a week and keep it out of direct sunlight.

Sensitive plant

This plant is also known as a shame plant because it has one very fun feature. When touched, the leaves fold and close up to hide from you. They also close up at sunset as if they are sleeping. Its scientific name is Mimosa Pudica and although it looks like a fern its actually an herb. It typically grows about 1-3 ft tall, clearly mine is still a baby plant. It’s also worth noting that it’s very toxic so you should wash your hands after handling it and its not the best plant to have around babies and pets. I keep mine high up on my dresser in my bedroom while it’s still small.

Planter Pots

Every plant needs a cute pot right, so now onto what to keep your new friends in. I curated a collection of pretty planters below that will look great in your home. I already own a few of these myself too… ok 8 of them haha. I told you I was plant lady.

So have I convinced you to try your hand a house plant? Or are you already a plant lover too?! Let me know in the comments!

A Few Small Updates Made a Big Impact in our Front Entry Hallway

October 21, 2020

A Few Small Updates Made a Big Impact in our Front Entry Hallway

I recently made some small changes to our front entry hallway and it’s really made a huge difference to the space. When we moved in, the house had been freshly painted grey and although it was a nice light shade of grey, I truly love white walls. So after living with the grey walls for a year I finally decided it was time to paint and make the house feel a little more like us. I painted the entire main floor and upper hallways in Benjamin Moore’s Simply White. It’s really such a nice white, not too cool or stark with just the right amount of warmth to it. Eventually I plan to replace the baseboards with something more substantial and add crown molding and full panel trim work to the walls (I dream big haha) but for now the white paint has made a huge difference and the space feels so much brighter.

Here are some before photos of the space, taken right when we moved in about a year ago.

As you can tell, I also changed the light fixtures to something more my style. I love the new lights so much. They’re ‘dupes’ of the famous hicks pendants but I got these on wayfair for a fraction of the cost.

Next I added three oversized black frames to one wall and had new mattes made for them so they looked a little more custom. These are the 50×70 size frames. I then framed black and white family photos in them. I love having family photos around the house and I usually print the photos in black and white so they all look cohesive in terms of colouring.

Finally I added this gorgeous Dash and Albert runner. It’s 12 feet long and perfect for the space. It’s an indoor/outdoor rug so I am hoping it holds up well with my kids and is easier to clean (I will have to report back in a few months!). Its also the perfect greige colour, a pretty grey thats warm so it really goes well with the other neutrals in my home.

I’m so excited to continue to work on this space in the future (is a home ever truly done?!) but these small updates have me loving the entryway so much more.

I’d love to hear what you think of the changes I’ve made. Let me know in the comments.

Beautiful Coffee Table Books

June 30, 2020

Beautiful Coffee Table Books

I have a bit of an addiction to coffee table books. I love having stacks of them all around my house. I tend to gravitate to neutral coloured ones (surprise right?!) but I also love some with gorgeous blue covers too. Often times these larger books come with dust jacket covers and if you remove them a beautiful solid coloured linen book is underneath (so always check under the dust jacket cover!). I’ve often found quite a few cheaper books at my local homesense (or homegoods if you’re American) and though I may not love the content, the cover underneath is the perfect colour to display with other books I have.

Below I’ve curated a collection of some of my favourite coffee table books to share with all of you. Many of these are home decor based but a few are fashion based as well.

Two of these titles (Make Life Beautiful by Syd and Shea Mcgee and More Beautiful by Mark Sikes) are yet to be released but based on their work I know they’ll be ones I’ll add to my collection.

I hope you found new books to fall in love with here. I’ve linked all of them for you below.

Favourite Home Decor Accessories

June 29, 2020

Favourite Home Decor Accessories

Small home accessories are some of my favourite items to shop for and purchase. They’re great because they are small but often have big impact. They can easily be moved around your house and quickly transform areas and spaces. So today I’m sharing some of my favourite small decor accessories for the home.

Coffee table books. Collecting coffee table books is one of my favourite hobbies haha and I probably have a stack of them on every surface of my home (coffee table, console, nightstand, serving carts, kitchen…) They’re great for adding some height variation to surfaces and you can easily layer other accessories on top… like vases, candles or decorative objects like the wishbone shown above.

Vases. I love having flowers around my home (both real and faux) and so having vases is necessary and there are so many beautiful ones available right now. I love the blue and white floral one above – it’s beautiful with or without florals inside and the cane one adds some nice texture to a space.

Wreathes. I own a few styles of wreaths, both ones for wall hanging and decorative ones on stands. I think they’re beautiful and because they are a taller accessory they can be used to add some height to your spaces and shelves. The new white wreath shown above is so pretty and a good contrast to the gold ones that are so popular.

Small Wall Decor. I have had my eye on the dinner bell above for quite a while. It’s so sweet looking and perfect for ringing to call all your babes to dinner or to come inside after hours of play outdoors. I also just recently added the ‘this is our happy place’ sign to my home as well. I smile every time I walk by it. I’m often a big proponent of large scale items on a wall but these little touches have a place too.

Boxes and Bowls. Boxes and larger bowls are great for placing on shelves or consoles. Not only are they great at filling in larger spaces, they are useful too for storage (who doesn’t need more storage).

Layering Pieces. I love using smaller decorative objects like the wishbone above, candles or small planters by placing them on stacks of coffee table books. Objects like wood prayer beads or the popular chain links are perfect for draping over large surfaces or again stacks of books.

I hope you love my selection of favourite accessories. I’ve linked them all below for you. Now I’m off to finally order that adorable dinner bell!

Linen Closet Reveal

June 1, 2020

Linen Closet Reveal

I’m so excited to share our newly updated linen closet with you! I wanted a project that would be quick and fun while we are staying at home and this was the perfect one. I absolutely love how it turned out.

The closet is actually a really good size but I don’t think it’s been touched probably since this house was built (18 years ago!). So I started by giving the entire room a fresh coat of white paint. I wanted a bright white since this room has no natural light so I chose Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore. This instantly made a huge difference as it covered up any old marks and scuffs the walls had and really brightened it up.

Next I added these fun polka dots! They were super easy to install as they are just like stickers (and they are removable so if I ever want to change this room up, I easily can).

Next I added some new storage baskets. I wanted to add some warmth and texture to the very black and white space so I chose these perfect water hyacinth baskets (I have the medium size).

Now I invite you to see the finished space!

I store extra pillows, sheets and blankets on the upper shelf and the baskets are great for storing extra throw cushion covers and toiletries as well as diapers and wipes. I even have some tissue boxes in them too! I also love these bottled detergents, I’ll admit I bought them mostly for styling because the bottles are just so pretty but they do work great as well!

The medicine box I bought with a red plus on it which didn’t work with the room. I had a black plus decal made and put it right over the red one… a little tip if you can’t find exactly what you need. Finally we changed out the light. It was literally just a light bulb before and I’m so happy with this simple yet stylish light. Take a look at this before and after.

I’m just loving how fun, playful and organized this space is now.

Front Porch Essentials and My Plans for our Own Front Porch.

May 22, 2020

Front Porch Essentials and My Plans for our Own Front Porch.

We moved into our new home a few weeks before fall started last year and with the unpacking and winter, I really haven’t touched our porch much at all. Now that the warmer weather is here I’m dreaming of a pretty and welcoming (when we can have guests again!) front porch. Below I’m sharing my plans for the space (including what I think are essentials for any porch) and what items I’m planning to grab!

Items I’ve Already Added

Large rug for layering – I recently purchased the black and white striped rug below and I love how I can layer a doormat on top. It creates a cozy feeling for the porch. It’s an indoor/outdoor rug and so far its held up well against the rain and dirt and its machine washable too!

Cute doormat (an essential) – I’ve had this “please hide packages from husband” doormat for awhile now and everyone who comes to our house always comments on it and laughs. It’s definitely a fun one… and sometimes the delivery person actually hides packages under it LOL. I think every porch needs a doormat, whether it has a funny saying or simply the word welcome written on it, it instantly creates a welcoming invitation to your home.

A cute sign – This happy place sign is my newest purchase and I plan to hang it on the brick outside the door. I also love the ‘welcome’ and ‘home sweet home’ versions as well!

Items On My Wishlist

New lighting – I would love to swap out our current light as the style that is there doesn’t match my own. I’d love to add this light as I love the lantern style and the larger scale of it. Lighting is always so powerful and instantly changes a space.

A wreath (an essential) – A gorgeous wreath is always an essential for me and if you know me, you know I love lemons so this wreath is perfect. I also love this wreath, this wreath and this one too!

Planters (an essential) – A few cute planters are also a must have for any porch. I’m loving the fluted style right now (as shown on the black one) so much and I’d add some hydrangeas or a large fern for a super lush look. A smaller planter in front of a larger adds a nice layered look as well.

Small accessories – I want to add a few lanterns to the opposite side of the door and the planters. I’m loving these gold toned ones and how they play off the shade of the doormat and new address numbers.

Address numbers – Finally I’d like to add some beautiful address numbers to our space as well. I love these unlacquered brass ones so much and they’ll patina so nicely.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on my front porch plans! Leave me a comment below!

xo,

Rach
